Hey all. As some of you know, I’m into 4-wheeling. Every now and then, someone posts a URL to a Jeep video on a site. I like saving these videos, but certain sites don’t seem to allow this. I tried an evaluation of a capture program called Hidownload, but even it doesn’t work. Some are Apple videos that have a cryptic file name. I use Media Player Classic and on the Apple videos, it says it cannot render the file. Here is an example of a video I’d like to save: (url deleted)Please disregard the crap at the top of the page. Which is why I want to save it somehow, without that other crap. A lot of my friends have kids, which is why I won’t send them the link. Is there anyway of saving these videos?

HI TK:
I think I'm downloading for you now. I remember Getright had a browser feature, so I stopped by the web site, and browsed for anything .mov. It was the only one listed. As soon as I get it, and see if it works, I'll make it available to you.
I can see why you don't want to send the URL around. Looks like a place the kids should stay away :)

It’s a neat video if you’re into Jeeps like I am. But the site is NOT family friendly. A lot are like that. The MSN videos can’t be saved. I try to send a link because I can’t save them, but if someone waits a day to get their E-mail, it’s gone. Some of the “Stupid Videos” are wild, especially the animal ones. They are downright cute.

I totally understand, and encountered such myself. It's a pity they can't at least offer a family friendly alternative. But then, that's why I'm poor, and they're rich. I don't think like them :)
Anyway, I was able to snag your video, it's a 17+ meg Quicktime monster, so no way I can e-mail it. Would you want me to mail it on CDR via US Postal, or say drop it off at Chucks? If you want to e-mail me your postal address, just click on my link below my SIG.
Hope you enjoy it :)

What did you use to capture it? If I go back to the site in one day, I can tell the video is still on my computer, but I can’t find the file. It has to be some sort of temp file, but I can’t locate it. I use the Firefox browser for things like that, but a lot of times, if a video opens in a second window, it asks to install Media Player 9, which I have. I then have to open the web page in Explorer to see it, but still can’t save it. I don’t want you to go to the trouble of saving things for me. I want to know how to do it myself. 17 megs? That’s a big one.

TK:
Now this doesn't work *all* the time, but this time it did. First you need Getright to do it with. at: http://www.getright.com/get.html
Then look for a feature called 'getright browser' (may be in the main directory/tools, or 'ctrl-b'
Goto the web site's exact page that has that movie. In this case, the one you posted. Cut/paste that URL form your browser's address line, to Getright's address line. It'll take a few seconds to get the web site's directories. Once it's done, go to the edit menu, select 'find' (or CTRL-F), and do a search for any .MOV files (or .MPG, .MPEG, .AVI, .RM...etc.) Select any .MOV file you find, and download it.
Now remember this won't work with all sites. Some sites are locked to this. But this one wasn't, so easy to get into.
Trying to find it in your temp directory, rarely works, I've found. it's sad, there's times when I find videos I want to keep. But anyway, hope this helps.
Good luck!

Sorry guys... this one's really easy. Under the video (same column towards the bottom) is a link that says "Launch in external browser". Right click that and choose "Save Target As". You'll save the .mov video file on your computer.
Did you see the 4x4 truck roll over? How'd those guys in the back survive? That's horrible! Amazing everyone made it out fine.

Well I finally figured out how to save the video. I had to click on “Launch in external browser”. Is there any way to capture some of the videos on MSN? That place doesn’t have that option. It would be nice to capture some of that stuff, but I can’t find the URL to the videos on that site. But hey, thanks for the info on that other video. The wife even likes to watch those Jeeps get wild. Yeah, I saw the rollover. There are so many sites with this stuff. One of the things I watch for is what they did wrong. That way I don’t make the same mistake. But when things go wrong, it happens fast. Trust me, I know. I’ve almost rolled several times. Now it you like airplane videos: http://www.alexisparkinn.com/aviation_videos.htm This site is awesome: Maybe Chuck could start a video site.

Sorry for the link. I was going to delete that today. You can delete this entire post if you want. I managed to capture that video. I’d still like to figure out how to capture some of those MSN videos. Like I said, some of the animal videos are funny. That skate boarding dog was wild. He could even turn it to keep from hitting stuff.

May I suggest for future consideration, that any link that is toward an unfamily friendly site, be offered by an e-mail, or private mail though here? That way, we won't have any accidents like this, and the need for deletion of threads, or editing of posts.
Its a hard line we must lay out, for a family friendly site. but that's better than censorship. No apologies needed, TK. You accually found a bug in the practices, and allowed us to correct it. What say Chuck? Maybe add that to the AUP of the BBS? (Acceptable Use Policy)

Absolutely no problem. I’ll just contact Mr. Redden. It used to be you could watch something like that, then dig around the ‘puter and find it. Now, they disappear or they just leave a link to the page. Plus, a lot seems to be in QuickTime with a cryptic file name. I saw a site that said to rename that type of file to “whatever.mov”. Doesn’t seem to work for me. Media Player Classic says it “Cannot render file”. That’s if you can find it.

tkcomer, I used to be able to find things like that in the temporary internet folder until I got XP...now it seems I can't find anything in that folder. Dont know if I am doing something wrong or if the files just arent saved there anymore.

There's a setting that's new on Windows XP that prevents looking in system folders and hidden folders. If you click "Start", point to "Search", then click "For Files or Folders...", you will get a search window. On the left hand side is a nav bar. Click "All files and folders". In the bar labeled "All or part of the filename:", enter the following:
*.mov
(You can change the file extension above to match the file type you're looking for. * is a wildcard)
Make sure that the "Look in:" bar is set to your hard drive(s), then click "Search". While it is searching your hard drive, click "Stop". The nav bar will change and now there is a section that reads, "No, refine this search and...". Click the option "Change whether system and hidden files are included". Select the "Expanded" option and click "Search".
Voila!

I decided to give that search a try and all it found was the QuickTime videos I have on the ‘puter. Some that I’ve downloaded and some taken by my camera. It didn’t spot any of the other videos that are in my hard drive. Much less the test video I tried to find.

After some hard searching, I found the test video. If I leave it in the temp folder I find it in, and click on it, I get a warning about “Running a system command my be harmful to your computer.” Then the video plays. If I move it to another folder to save it, Media Player Classic says it cannot render the file. Window Media Player 9 says Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. What gives with this? These stupid pet tricks are making me feel stupid. It’s odd it opens in the temp file but not anywhere else. Any suggestions? I have the file if someone wants a crack at it.
