MAYSVILLE -- Mrs. Dorothy E. (Willett) Smith, 83, died Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at her residence.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Anthony J. and Doris (Scott) Willet of Stonington, Conn., and graduated from Stonington High School with the class of 1940. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their four sons, resided on Granite Street in Westerly, R.I. In 1969, the family moved to Maysville, where Mr. Smith was employed. She was active as a volunteer for the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the Welcome Center. Her talents for writing and cooking were combined, as she became a columnist for the Maysville Ledger Independent. She wrote for the newspaper for 27 years and authored a book, Cooking Along the Buffalo Trace.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Gordon; four sons, Gordon Jr. (Carol) of York, Pa.; twins Anthony of Maysville and Scott (Kayla) of Lebanon, Pa., and Jeffrey (Amy) of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Scott Anthony Smith of York, Pa., Aaron (Deborah) Smith of Warren, N.J., Adam Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz., Amy Smith of Chadd's Ford, Pa., Krista Smith of Seattle, Wash., Sgt. Ryan Smith, US Army, Fort Bragg, N.C., Lauren Smith of Lexington, and Madeline Smith of Lexington. One sister, Mabel Medeiro of Stonington, Conn, preceded her in death.
There will be a celebration of Dorothy's life at her home, 329 East Second Street, Maysville, Saturday, June 18. The open house will be from 2-6 p.m. The ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Simon Kenton Post 2734 will have a tribute at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Riverbend cemetery in Westerly, R.I. at a later date.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Dorothy's memory to York County Special Olympics, P.O. Box 453, York, Pa., 17347. Dorothy's special grandson, Scott Anthony Smith along with many others have benefited greatly from this organization, or to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056. The folks of Hospice have been so very lovingly helpful to Dorothy and her family during these trying times for the family.
