ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Florida school officials are apologizing for the arrest of a 5-year-old, whose tantrum landed her in the back of a police cruiser.

Officials said the girl threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls. She was upset when a teacher took away jelly beans she was counting in a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School.

Minutes later, she was under arrest for battery. The 40-pound girl's hands were bound with plasic ties and her ankles in handcuffs.

A school superintendent said campus police should have been called. He said school officials "never want to have 5-year-old children arrested."

No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother, who said her daughter will not return. In her words, "They set my baby up."

.........it's probably a good thing THAT wasn't my child coming home. She would get her bottom spanked just like the way my father did me years ago.

Oh by the way, a good ol' fashion paddling didn't hurt me then & I'm definitely not robbing banks or mugging old ladies today because of that.

Proverbs 23:13 in my Bible says it best: (NIV)

13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

Where are the parents in this one?? ................see ya Mark

We are talking about a 5 year old child. You do not arrest 5 year olds for throwing a temper tantrum. You restain the child and call the parent.
One thing most people do not even think about it the fact that children are just that...CHILDREN. They are not minature adults and do not have the mentality to think like an adult. Having this child arrested and placed in the back of a police crusier is not going to have the same affect on the child as it would an adult.
Granted, the child's behavior was unacceptable and needed discipline, but this went too far.

OMG she is five...If I called the law everytime one of the kids in the daycare threw a temper tantrum...I would have to have my own police station in my house. There is soooo many things they could have done in that situation...
I also agree with Mark...we as parents are so afraid to discipline our children now days that it shows in our childrens behavior...they even have a 1 800 # for kids to call on their parents...

Mark, buddy your right on the money..... I couldn't believe the things the news media said this child did. I wonder what mom did when she got the kid home? I bet she took her out for ice cream? probably blamed the teachers, and likely will file a big ol law suit. If she was my child, she wouldn't be able to sit down for a week, LOL!
