FRANKFORT - The state Transportation Cabinet could begin phasing in a
new license plate design as soon as 2006 under a bill approved today by
the House.
House Bill 426, sponsored by Rep. Hubert Collins, D-Wittensville, would
allow the Transportation Cabinet to update license plates when it sees
fit, rather than the current five-year schedule.
"We have a proposal for a new license plate," Collins said, "but before
that can happen we need to alter the process by which new plates are
approved."
The current Kentucky license plates have won an award from the
Automobile License Plate Collectors Association, but largely drawn scorn
from the public.
The new license plate proposed by the Fletcher Administration would
feature the new state logo, "Unbridled Spirit." It has already received
approval from the Transportation Cabinet and the Department of
Corrections, which manufactures the plates. If approved by the General
Assembly and signed by the governor, the plates would begin production
in July.
The bill now moves to the Senate for its consideration.
