..............I wonder why the modeling industry is portraying women as huzzies, "mean" looking in their ads in recent years. Just look at any fashion magazine & you'll see what I mean.

What happened to the Cheryl Tiegs, Christy Brinkley big smiles look ? The girls of today are about half scary when viewed. I bet the modeling agencies & clothing makers would sell more products without the "mean spirited" huzzie looking models in the magazines.
Here's an example, look at the cover of this Jane magazine:
http://www.magazineline.com/Public/Jane.htm

The model has her finger in her mouth & looks mean. Men, would you ask her for a date? Not me!
Here's another:
http://www.fashionmagazine.com/

Looks like life isn't treating Jessica Stamm right & she's ready to "slap" someone.
Not interested either.

How about one more:
http://www.fashionlines.com/2005/feb/home.php

This model ( in leather)looks like she's ready to pull out a gun from that undercoat & "shoot" you. Not interested either.

I guess I'm sort of ol' fashioned looking for women that has a more feminine- innocent look with those big smiles.

I'd like to hear what the women have to say about this.

Are you frustrated with the current fashion statements??
Does this type of advertising " degrade" women?
Would you like to see the fashion movement go back to the earlier days where beautiful women actually smiled for the photos??
What's your thoughts?? .................see ya Mark

Sadly, it's the industry and their obsession with copying everything that even suggests that sells big. RIAA did that when Madonna came out. Suddently everyone was wanting to be Madonna or I should say RIAA wanted everyone to be a Madonna clone

They go though this sort of cycle. I can remember after Christy, and Cheryl, it was the heron look. Where girls was so thin, AND sick looking, they looked like a slight breeze (a cat's paw in meterological terms) would blow them into the next county, and they'd die of a cold.

Now it's the grunge, or mean look. In a few years, they'll have soemthing different. Probably then, amputations, if they haven't gotten into 90% body tatoos, body piercings, or brandings.

I know what I like in a female, and the fashion industry, or even the porn industry can't provide that. After all, a female isn't all 50DDD breasts, bleached blond hair, and *painted* blue eyes. (blue contacts) Oh not to forget, painted white teeth too, and barely legal age as well.

Something to be said about females 30+, and natural looking.

Not to mention latin, or african, or asian, or cucasian, and brunette ;). With long legs, and a *natural* smile, and a pleasent personallity. Not to mention some brains too.

Yeah, I got an impossible dream, but that's my dream :)

Thank you, Mark & KC! You know, a smirking over made face is NOT sexy. It’s, well…weird! Those models are pencil thin, wear a ton of make-up and seem so…COLD! Who really looks like that? Then again, if I only got to eat raw veggies, I would be snarling too.
I would rather see the smiles and the carefree ‘real’ look as opposed to the “serious but sexy” image. A person can have average looks but a terrific smile can make them look like a million bucks. It doesn’t take all the make-up and bling-bling to make a person attractive. Don’t get me wrong, I like to get painted up and powdered up every now and then too, but I don’t wear enough to share with the neighborhood.
I personally do not think you have to be bone-thin to be attractive either. But, getting back to what you asked, yes, bring back the smiles!

I was never a big makeup person myself...was way thin for along time (100 when I got married)but now in weigh in at close to but not over 130 lbs...lol...not bad to look at but not gorgeous...but I do have a good personality and would be there in a minute if you needed me. I tell ya, I feel better now than I have ever in my life, healthily that is.
When I was young I had a lot of snobby friends that fall in that "models" type, and they were merisable most of the time. I see what you are talking about in my daughter already...we just went through this big thing of her eating right...(she thought she was getting fat...oh plz, she is maybe 55 lbs soaking wet.) and she is only 10. I was always a person that looked for the "inside" beauty of a person, that is what really counts.

Wait a minute. I read that men are starting to look at these magazines. That’s the look you get from your honey when you roll in late from somewhere. Maybe they are trying to get us men accustomed to that “look.”

i liked the suggestive finger in the mouth thing sexy to the extreme and as for a powerfull woman now that is truly the sexist of all thin ,fit, looking good to her man now that is a way to save a marrige. as for you ladies who think makeup is for" huzzies" i got news for you those are the babes your husbands are looking at! they are fit(thin) they bring home the bacon fry it up in a pan and never ever let you forget you are a man because they are sexy women who care about their appearence so ladies do yourselves a favor be more like the women in the blue states as they are always fit and trim they also dress well. incidentally the blue states have a lower divorce rate than the red i am sure it is because the women stay more fit and trim and attractive to their husbands.know when to push away from the table ladies it will do your relationships well hubba hubba......

Hey Mark,, Nice atricle.
Sex sells. These are the people G.W. gives the tax breaks too.

Is it a natural decay of society? our mearly our mental evolution so to speak? or do advertisers pray on the depreved? Too many qiestions and so much money be spent om this stuff.

Ok lackocash if this is the post you were talking about (in your PM) then the following is my reply…..

“I liked the suggestive finger in the mouth thing sexy to the extreme and as for a powerful woman now that is truly the sexist of all thin, fit, looking good to her man now that is a way to save a marriage. As for you ladies who think makeup is for" hussies" I got news for you those are the babes your husbands are looking at!”

A “finger in her mouth” does not make a woman sexy….I am taking that as you mean if a woman project attitude that makes her sexy…?

“Looking good to her man now that is a way to save a marriage”….I kind of agree with that one, I do feel you should always look good for your man…BUT…I expect the same in return….although I think my hubby looks so sweet in the mornings when he first wakes up.

“Hussies”….I am sure I can speak for all women here…what we a talking about is the women that ware 3 lbs of makeup, to where it makes their heads lean forward.

“Those are the babes your husbands are looking at”…….I would think it was really weird if my husband didn’t notice a pretty woman….But I am the one he comes home to at night and I must be doing something right…we have been together for almost 25 years.

“They are fit (thin) they bring home the bacon fry it up in a pan and never ever let you forget you are a man”…lol dude, you so dated yourself here….I remember that commercial, that is the same time zone as…”mom made shake and bake, and I helped”…lol……and now of days it takes two to “bring home the bacon”, and hubby and I work together to “fry it up in the pan” and to “never ever let you forget you are a man” ….well just make sure “you still make me feel like a natural woman”…lol(I am so killing myself with laughter this morning….roflao).

As for the rest of your post…..Marriage is a 24/7 job (on BOTH sides) I don’t care what state you live in…its not just about how you look, its about how you treat each other, feelings, goals, dreams that are shared….personally….I had a goal when I got married to my hubby…. “love, honor and trust” each other as we grow old together, come to think of it…..none of the vows I said had anything about…weight, makeup and sticking my finger in my mouth…….and now I end my post to you with a ….. :p

Mark…that first link in your post…..darn right she looks mean, that “model” is the actress… Angelina Jolie: Tomb Raider

The second link…She is “Canada's Top Model”…she is only 19 years old…She is young and they are making her look way beyond her years…shame

As for the third link….all I can say is…roflas…can you see “any” of the women is Maysville…dress like that…….lol…

"Are you frustrated with the current fashion statements?? ............don't have time to read
Does this type of advertising " degrade" women?....women can only be degraded if they allow it
Would you like to see the fashion movement go back to the earlier days where beautiful women actually smiled for the photos??" smiling is contagious

LOL. That's also the look you get from your lady when you are standing in the check out line and your eyes happen to linger too long on the fashion magazines. :) Not that mine do of course. Ahem....

Actually, after giving it some thought, that cold, mean look is the exact look of the men in GQ and men fashion magazines. I was thinking, isn't it more demeaning to women to assume that they are all warm and friendly? I've met some real cold, mean women in my time. And in many ways that aloof and uncaring personality is sexy.

Now here's my question: how come on all the magazines for women, there are women, and on all the magazines for men, there are women. Now that's demeaning in my opinion. Women should have their fantasies too. Why isn't there some buff guy in an apron on the cover of Good Housekeeping? or whatever it is that women like.

Jeremy...yep, women sure do have fantasies and you're right, we never get the sexy, buff guys on the covers of our magazines. Totally unfair!

I never understood it either. Womens mags are full of women. And a lot of the models are down right hard looking. And rail thin. You could cut glass with their elbows. We need to get back to ads of the fifties. Where the women met you at the door, grabbed your briefcase and handed you a drink. Those girls were always smiling.

dear mark

many thanks for reading fashionlines.com. we are always interested in our readers' comments. did you know that the cover ensemble worn by the model you were commenting upon is designed by ralph lauren? it is one of his classic looks and he brings this same suit back every few years. the runway looks very different than reality. it would not shake up people to always see smiling girls---to grab attention, sometimes fashion stylists go a little hard. then some seasons they go soft. but a soft look every season, just like a hard look, is boring! fashion is all about change! if you look at all the runways around the world that we show in www.fashionlines.com, you will see all kinds of looks!

.............to Christine ( From Calif. ) WOW!!..... We rec'd a response from someone in the fashion industry & I didn't even leave my email addy on that website. All I did was a little surfing & found that site.
Regarding the model in the leather, I did noticed the name of Ralph Lauren on the webpage. My original post isn't intended to slam you or anyone else's fashion line. I must agree that after decades of fashion, one must come up with something "more" extravagant than the competition. I understand that well.

However, if you reread the original post, I wasn't complaining about the clothing the models were wearing..... I understand that fashion is in the eye of the beholder. My complaint is.............most current day models ( judging from the neck up ) are "mean" spirited looking or have that "huzzie" look like they are ready to slap someone attitude.

Forgive me, I guess I'm from the ol' school ( high school graduate-1977 ) & REALLY remember the big Christy Brinkley & Cheryl Tiegs smiles from the 1970's, unlike the models of today.

I guess that's the punishment we get for getting old.

Christine, thanks for responding ............see ya Mark

Uprivergirl, kcredden can help you on the spyware. He has a lot of good stuff on the ‘puter section of this board. Personally I use Ad-Aware SE and Spybot. Both are free programs. Do a search, download them and install them. You will be amazed at what you find. That way, your computer will be as lean and mean as some of those models.

dear mark and guys

i found out about your message board through our magazine's "stats taker"--it always lists which message boards are listing fashionlines. i think you all have some very good points. models are too thin in general and they should smile more---but they are told by the stylists not to smile. i will refer my stylists friends to your thoughts about disgusting modeling techniques! and i will look in to see how all of you are doing from time to time. i like your message board! all my best, christine

I figured how you found the board and emailed Mark. Was going to PM and ex[lain it to him. Glad you came back and did so your self.

Models too thin? Reality tells me they are thin enough to Sell. This is natural and human nature. We will buy more from pretty people, I'm not saying it;s right or wrong. All saying these ladies sell because they are thin and sexy.

Even women buy more stuff from pretty women.

annieap
February 18th, 2005, 08:46 AM
You do not have to be extremely thin to be pretty or attractive. Personality and what's inside carries a long way. As for the models, take away the enhancements, the personal trainers, the liposuctions and plastic surgeries then you see the REAL person.

mark
February 18th, 2005, 10:39 AM
......................That's a pretty slick method of computer work grabbing the message boards around the country. I was rather curious how a "small town" board was found by the "big time" fashion industry. Hmmm, this "net" stuff amazes me more & more daily.

I understand Christine's comments & agree, it's not the models that are to be accused here. They are only doing what someone above them is paying them to do. Where I work, I see dozens of different magazines daily & I noticed this fashion trend several years ago.

I hate to use Ebay as an example, but it's the easiest ( non biased ) pics I can find. Ignoring the clothing line ( not important here ) here's what I'm referring to:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14890&item=6128665253&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V

The smiles of those models is contagious & should sell more of the ( unknown ) clothing line they are wearing........if.........that was promoted here.
This is a great example of what I'm referring to. Stylists of today should get together with Cover Girl & probe them for their secrets. It worked extremely well for them 25 years ago & should still work today.

Just my thoughts. Any others?? ......................see ya Mark

I agree with Anne on this: While this post was going on, I was reviewing in my mind, what playmates I found to be the most attractive when I was a wee baron, and guess what? They wasn't the rail-thins of today.

Lets see, there was:

Kim Herrin (petite build, blond back in the late 70s I think.)
Candy Loving - larger build, late 70s
Kristy Thom - asian, medium build early 80s
Cathy Boostrum (I think that's the spelling) large build, late 70s)
Karan Taylor - mixed african/island, late 80s, I think also was a PMOY
Lisa Matthews
Tai Collins
Jenny McCarthy
Suzi Simpson
Stephanie McAdams (african, petite)

Yeah, I've got a good memory, when I start working with it :)

They also wasn't enhanced either, they was proportional. Lovely ladies, and all smiled. That was a major plus in my book. What is in PB today, I can't say, my last book was at least 10 years ago.

You do not have to be extremely thin to be pretty or attractive. Personality and what's inside carries a long way. As for the models, take away the enhancements, the personal trainers, the liposuctions and plastic surgeries then you see the REAL person.
