When I reboot I get this: Cannot find a device file that maybe needed to run Windows or a WIndows application. The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to the device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its unstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the mssing file.
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\Symevnt.386
Press key to continue (so I did and this popped up)
Can not find etc. and then repeats the above message except the missing file is: C:\Progra~1\Norton~1\NAVAP.VXD Press any key to continue.
What does all this mean and how do I uninstall/reinstall and where do I find this program to do all this?

Ok, I think that's a norton's antivirus program problem. I noticedthe \norton~1\NAVAP.VXD which sounds like NAV. Just reinstall NAV and see if that doesn't clear up your problem.

Kevin, I can't since I put on AOL 9.0 security which is McAfee. Even before I did that this week I tried to uninstall and reinstall Norton and it would get hung up. Thats why I paniced and switched to security (9.0 AOL) so I would have anti virus. Now I find when I first sign in in the morning my AOL gets hung up so I have to go shut down(reboot) and then go into AOL's Get Help and fix. That gets to be old real fast. When I reboot does that cause any harm to the PC. I must of rebooted 10 tiimes yesterday before I got help from AOL. Thanks for your help.

IA-gal:

Sorry I took so long to get back. To answer your question, no it doesn't hurt to reboot many times. If you can, ask Chuck for the remainder of help. I've ran into some serious system problems myself. So I won't be here much for the next few days until I get some fixes in place. I'll be back soon, and hope you find a solution soon.

So you’ve uninstalled Norton Antivirus. Sounds like the uninstall did not remove all the files. You might try this. Click on Start, then click on Run. Now type in “msconfig” This should bring up the system configuration utility. Now click on the startup tab. Look for anything that refers to Norton or files that say SMNE. Symtec files. Remove the check marks and reboot. If those files are still on there, they are looking for Norton Anti-Virus And these are boot files. A safer way would be to find a program that fixes registry errors. I use Norton System Works. Hope this helps.

I would suggest to right click the start menu then explore all users then program files and delete the folder or if your an advanced user you can go into regedit and delete the files there.

Well I know what the problem is... you have got AOL Or as I call it AOHELL!!

LOL.. just playing, but I have NEVER seen a system work well when it has AOL on it.

Good Luck though.

I recomend you take the computer to TCS. On Second St. in Maysville. They have saved my computer twice now. And she works GREAT NOW!! And it didn't cost me a fortune either.

the correct answer is to remove norton av using symantecs removal tools available at their web site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

you can search the symantec support site for rnav if you have a version newer than 2003 (which is the link I posted above - for versions up to 2003)

If you are going to fix it, fix it right the first time......
