Here is one to throw out there...What do you think is the meaning of life? Okay you Monty Python fans, not the one the troupe displayed in the movie, but your true opinion. I will reserve the right to throw out my bekiefs in a later post in order to not slant this thread in the firection of my beliefs. This is not meant to start gogmatic arguments, but rather to share beliefs of other people. Will post later.....Ken

............to serve others..........that can be from volunteering at civic groups, schools, singing in the choir at your church, driving church vans to pick up the elderly, joining Big Brothers, cub scouts, girl scouts, coaching T-ball, etc.
One must realize that we are here only for a very short time & we must make the best of it.
Jesus says it better than I will ever be able to in Matthew 5:13-16....
13“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
14“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven......................see ya Mark

I agree with Mark, plus I'd add; to better oneself. Work at making yourself a better person, which will in turn make you better at helping others. Life is a precious gift, be it the insects, to the great whales. Intelligent life, if there is such on this earth is even more precious, for there is so few examples of it. (no I'm not making a joke now.)

I think our purpose is defined by God and changes as we grow in faith. The more we are able to do for others, the more God expects us to do. I think whatever God has planned for each of us will involve helping others in one way or another, as stated by everyone else. Good luck in your search..... A good place to start is within ones self.

this is not Python, but Vonnegut...
God made mud.
Some of the mud sat up.
Mud asked "Why am I here?"
God pondered.
God said, "Dunno. You figure it out."

The secret to life is the assured knowledge of death. Without it man would not strive to leave his make on the face of the earth for all to remember.

Now that we have a few posts going, I will tell you what I believe. I believe I am on earth for one reason. That reason is to make a choice. Who shall I serve? God or mammon? God has given man free will. The choice is ours. Will we choose life or death. To be away from God, after all, is death.
I am a man who owes a;; to Him. I was diagnosed as a juvenile dibatec 32 years ago. Because of the lack of knowledge of my docotors, I went into diabetic coma. They gave me an hour to live. Yet, I am still alive, In 1996, I had kidney failure, and attempted to correct the problem with a kidney pancreas transplant. It was a complete failure, and almost died 3 times. At one point in the hospital a nurse told me she had a vision about me. She said that Satan would try to take my life that night, but God was not going to let him. Later that night, I developed a blood clot in my shoulder and my arm blem up three times its normal size. The doctors feared the clot would move to my heart or lungs, and kill me. They decided to put me on blood thinners. It did break up the clot, but it also caused me to bleed internally, where they had removed the failed transplant organs. I was literally bleeding to death. I had 9 units of blood, yet the bleeding continued. They said they were going to have to operate again, and I knew if they did, I was going to die. I prayed and told God I was ready to die, but if He could help me out I would really prefer not to. 5 minutes went by, ad a tingle went through my body, and the bleeding stopped suddenly. The doctors did not know why, but I knew, though unworthy, God had touched me and spared my life. Not only that, but my native kidneys began to work once again. The doctors said there was no medical explanation for it. they even began to call me "the miracle patient".
After I had healed up from the whole ordeal 6 months) my kidney function tapered off, and I had to go back on dialysis. At the dialysis clinic, I tried to witness to everyone, and tell them of the wonders God had worked in my life. I tried to teach them to never surrender, and battle kidney failure with laughter and faith. I was scared to ever try a transplant again.
Years went by, and my son who is now 6 was born. I was determined to try a transplant again for his sake. No one in my family stepped forward to offer me a kidney, excepy my dad who was not a match for me. My wife said that her blood type was the same as mine, and she wanted to see if she was a match. Amazingly, she was! God knew what he was doing when he brought us together (let what Go0d puts together, no man put asunder).
I still was not out of the woods. When we finally got the tranplant arranged(some hospitals dragged their feet), we were retested, and due to tranfusions, I had built up antibodies in my blood and rejectionb of the kidney was very likely. My only option was to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where they can do a special process called pheresis. Ohio State said they had not started a program. I sensed impending doom, as travel expensesexceeded my wallet. I stilll tried to figure out a way. In the midst of transferring to Baltimore, Ohio State cqalled and said that they were starting a pheresis unit, and wanted me to be their first patient. Talk about answered prayers!\
On December 8th last year, my loving wife gave a part of herself to me, that I might live. I still had another crisis to face. A week after the surgery I developed viral pnuemonia, and was unable to breathe on my own. They had to sedate me and put me on a respirator. The whole time Larry Polston form Aberdeen Baptist Church read to me from the Bible, though I heard nothing. But God heard, and in 4 days I awoke and was able to breathe on my own.
Due to being imunosuppressed, I caught shingles in the hospital. This was painful, as it was on my rear end, and groin area. After over 2 months of painful scraping and treatments, it finally healed.
Today, I feel like I did 8 years ago before the whole mess occurred.
who is responsible? No one, but God.
So my friiends, I close with this. Try to make this world a better place when you leave it. Though it is impossible, is it not the goal of the Christian to try to be Christ Like? Give of yourself to others, those who hate you, and spitefully use you. If someone asks you to walk a mile, go with him twain. Does your Father not do so? When I leave this earth I want others to remeber me with fondness, not tears, or malice. It is a far better place I go, than I have ever been before.

Friends, I've heard the man give that testimony in person. With all that he has been thru, I've noticed he does spend time with family, something we all need to do a little more of.
BTW Ken, those medals are ordered, my friend.
Can't wait to present them to you--with the family....I even put together a Pack 240 Powerpoint to show to the church family when we're ready.

We're challenged, pushed, beaten around, and kicked at times. But if we do give in, we're just tossing away the gift of life. So I'm a fighter. Sounds like your one too, KewJR. Well done post.

I have read this over and over...I know mammon means money...so I am not sure what way you are leaning towards...God or mammon????? The Bible says you "can't serve, God and mammon", and that "the LOVE of money is the root of all evil". We all need money to live, but we don't (or at least I don't) even put it in the same catagory as God. Sooooooooooo

..............this topic usually gets very heated because of all the religions offered in the world. Regarding that........all I can do live my life showing as much love & helping others as much as possible because, someday, the following verse from my Bible will come true for me:
2 Corinthians 5:10 (New International Version)
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
That verse alone keeps me in check. because someday, I want to hear the following statement from Jesus:
Matthew 25:23 (New International Version)
23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! .................see ya mark

I don't think any of us will ever know the meaning of life, however, we should do what feels right in our hearts. whose to say that If you don't read the Bible and go to church you will go to ****. I believe in God and everything I have read in the Bible. Yet I don't go to church and I believe that I can still go to heaven if I do what is right in this world and not sin. I lead the best life that I can.
I would really like to attend church, but have yet to find one where I feel confortable. I keep saying that I will go to church this weekend, but this weekend never comes. I not sure If I am strong enough to go to church without my husband. Yes I have prayed about what church to go to and whether or not to go by my self. Seems that I never get the answer I am looking for.
When My husband and I do go to church it seems that things in our life just works out better. but there are still things that have yet to work out..

amandaann, you sound just like me. i feel like if i live an honest life, give my time to those who need me, believe and have faith, pray daily and be grateful for what God has blessed me with, then I have a seat in heaven right beside the person who goes to church every Sunday.
you know the meaning of life is as simple as a childs thinking, live in the moment, trust and let God lead you. You may be getting answers to your prayers and just not paying attention to the what I call God whispers. Maybe a certain church pops into your mind as you are driving, or could be that you talk to a stranger and they just mention a street where a church you are thinking about attending is on.................be still and listen and HE will let you know.

............there are a few differences between the faiths, usually with baptism & communion. I moved from a dying church to this one in 1998 & I've been at MCN every since.
If you have been living in Maysville a long time, chances are you would know someone from the around 250+ that attends weekly at MCN. I was surprised of the amount of folks I knew when I first started attending.
My suggestion.......find a good Bible teaching church & start attending. You won't regret it.

Yes, I agree with Mark, try some churches out, I am Baptist and have visited several different churches in the area, I go where my soul is fed. I don't believe it matters what the name is as long as they are serving God and teaching your children from the bible how to be good Christians. I was raised in a Christian church and my parents family were Methodists, I even went to Catholic church with my friends from time to time but after I started a family it was my responsiblity to find a church home where we were all comfortable and above all a good bible teaching church. The meaning of life has changed in the years for me because my life has been affected by alcoholism (not me, but many family members) and everything I believed in left, except for God. I left him for a while but am back on track and my children are grown and have finally started looking for a church for their children. I believe they've realized with all the evils out there, they do need help from the family of God. I now live one day at a time and am learning everyday how much I need my higher power in my life and even though I've made many mistakes and thought I knew it all I have so much more to learn. I believe God sends people into our lives and we have to be still and listen. I do know that the more support you have from a family of God sure makes the walk on this earth more meaningful, because it sure is hard to do it alone.

My parents are trying to get me to go to their church and I don't feel confortable there. there has been a lot of drama and the people who started it were taken closer into the church where the ones who tried to prevent the wrongs were told that it was their fault. I am afraid that my parents will think bad of me if I go to any other church that a baptist, but I am beginning to think that a baptist church is not for me.
My husband would like the catholic religion but that is only because he likes to drink. My beliefs are different than my husbands. But i'm still not sure if I am strong enough to go by myself.

You need to worry about what God thinks, not what others think. I was raised Presbyterian, grew up and joined a Chrisitian Church. But I have gone to Pentecostal, Episcapal, Catholic, and Nazarene churches. All to find out where I fit.
As for the Nazarene church here... I like them. 4 of my closest friends attenc and are members of the Nazarene in Maysville. They are good honest caring people.
I understand your concerns. There are good and bad people in all areas of society, including churches. Go where your heart tells you.
I have been in your shoes, when I first moved here about 5 years ago, I had to do the same thing you are dreading, and I dreaded it too. I was not ccomfortable with people I didn't know suddenly surrounding me at the end of a service asking me questions I was not ready to answer. (I know they has good intentions... but I was very uncomfortable...) For me a simple hello would have sufficed and let me know that they saw me and welcomed me.
As a member of a church, I am STILL uncomfortable when we have to shake hands with others during the opening of services. I just keep remembering how I felt and I don't want others to feel that way.
When you find the right chuch you will know it. One of the first I went to and enjoyed and still go back to is New Hope Christian Church on US 68 just past Old Washington.

Trust me, there are many opinions offered on this site. I've been a member here for some time, and the vast majority of the folks here love to debate, and respect each others opinions. I think you will find that Chuck and all the moderators are very fair with everyone, and allow people to express their opinions with little censorship. However, there are times when people continue to post statments and make personal attacks that cannot be allowed. This is a community site, in which most of us know each other outside of our site names, and none of us wants to make another member feel unwelcome or not respected. Sure there are times when written statments can easily be mis read or taken in a way they were never intended, but for the most part, you can gage a lot of the communities views on topics, just by reading the post.
The banning of any member from this site goes far beyond any one post, and I know Chuck has given several warnings before banning anyone.

Amanda,
I always view religion as going to Florida, There's many roads you can take, but as long as you end up at the beach, that's all that really matters. My family is a prime example of that. My wife and son are Catholic, and by the way, in 21 years I've never known her to take a drink of anything stronger than Diet Coke. I'm Methodist, and have gone to the same church for 40 years. My wife and son go to Mass every Saturday night, and I go to service every Sunday morning. Some may find it odd, but we find it works.
Good luck in you're surch for a church home, and by the way, the doors of Trinity United Methodist are always open and we would welcome anyone of any faith to worship with us.
God Bless.

............my stuation was quite similar dealing with the parents. The church I left was the one I grew up in. Leaving it was hard to do, but pleasing my parents wasn't my concern.
Getting spiritually fed for my family was more important. My bride & I attended several churches for 4-5 months before landing at MCN........and........I knew folks at all the churches I visited.

metalgina, we try to be civil here and respect different views. our debates get pretty heated sometimes, but if you read all the post from beginning to end you will see that we usually come to an understanding or we just agree to disagree. for myself, i have learned alot on these boards just by reading everyones post and thinking about what they have to say, even if i sometimes tend to pop off a reply before i think about it. it would be truly boring for us all, i would wager if we all thought the same way. but here on the BBS you will find some interesting, intelligent, caring and wise folks.
Heck, I have even tried to figure out what lack-o-cash was really trying to say behind all those post that oozed so much hate.

First of all I would like to thank all of you who have tried to help me out and for all of the invites. We or I will gladdly be checking on some if not all of them until we or I find a place to feel at home. I'm still not sure where to begin I'm sure it will some to me soon. I will have to listen for God to answer my prayers.
Thanks again.
Amandaann...........if you want, you can email me & I'll put you in touch with a wonderful pastor that can possibly help with any answers you may have about protestant religions. Also, I can let you know the types of programs offered at MCN. We have something going on for any age from 3 year olds & up.

I believe God put us here for a reason and it is up to us to figure it out and use the time we have wisely. We may never know the exact reason, but it is not meant for us to ask. If God wanted us to know, he would let us know. You just need to keep faith in the Lord and believe that he will lead you down the right path in life.
"Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." Mark 9:23

I know I believe in God and that he helps and guides us everyday to do the right things in life. Without God nothing is possible. He is what makes the world go round. God directs and guides us everyday but it is up to us to listen to him and do the right things. He tells us what to do but not always do we believe or listen to what he has to say. I believe that we are put down here on earth to spread the word of God to everyone we know and meet. Then it is up to each individual to believe or not believe. I don't remember where exactly in the bible but it says "that the only unforgiveable sin is not believeing in God". And " that only a few will enter the Kingdom of Heaven". Only God knows who believes and who doesn't and He only knows what few will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
