On New Year's Day, I always serve some form of cabbage, whether it be cooked, escalloped or even in cole slaw. I am curious as to how many of you participate in this tradition and in what form do you serve/eat your cabbage.

Annie, I can use all the luck I can get, so I always have cabbage on New Year's Day! :)

I fix it many ways, boiled, fried with a little bacon grease and curry powder, escalloped, cole slaw, turnip and cabbage mixed, potato and cabbage mixed, or thrown into a big pot of homemade veggie soup.

If I am going to have soup, I try to make it on New Year's Eve. There's something about veggie soup, chilli, and fresh green beans, that makes them taste better re-heated!! :D

Not only that but, with just two of us left at home now, a big pot of soup can be three or four meals that week. Sure saves on cooking!!

CABBAGE?????????

I prefer my cabbage at your house. Oh, and you can feel free to start supper without me. I guess I will have to pass on the extra luck.

Cabbage leaves are considered a sign of prosperity. It is said that by eating cabbage on New Years day, you will have good luck and prosper throughout the year. As mentioned earlier, I have prepared it cooked, steamed, escalloped as well as cabbage rolls, cole slaw and saurkraut.
I won't eat veggie soup if it doesn't have cabbage in it. My husband's family had never heard of such until I came along. Now he also enjoys cabbage in his soup along with a nice chunk of cornbread.

.........I asked my wife while reading this thread just a few minutes ago. She said the same thing you just did. I was like your husband, never heard of it.

Hmmmm, I may try some New Year's Day................see ya Mark

Ah, yes, the New Year's cabbage. It is a tradition in this household too. We will have what is called a New England Boiled Dinner. It consists of Corned Beef (we like the brisket), potatoes, carrots, onions, and lots of cabbage. I let the corned beef cook several hours and add the vegetables during the last hour or so, otherwise they become mush. It is very tasty and of course, supplies a whole week of left overs. The tradition hasn't made us rich, but who knows, maybe we'd all be worse off without it, heh? Happy New Year to y'all.

My family, always followed German tradition, (thanks to my Dad's heritage)and had Pork and Sauerkraut on New years day. It is a tradition I still maintain.

I too am not rich from doing this, but I hate to think where I would be if I didn't eat cabbage on new years day.

Annie:

I was introduced to cabbage in soups, at one of the buffet bars in a steak resturant. Now I'm like you. I love cabbage veggie soup. :) My mother fixes it the same way now. That's one of the nice things about those buffet bars. You'll find things you never knew you liked, like Tomato floraine soup which sadly I can't touch anymore. But oooo was it good.
