From the attached article by Walt Williams:

"Abolition of the IRS and the income tax code it enforces, replaced by a national sales tax, would create greater economic incentives, enhance personal privacy, and lower tax compliance cost by an estimated 90 percent."

Is this fair or not?? ..............see ya Mark

A flat tax at 10% might be nice. Wouldn't work and are not the figures that came from the Government in the 1980's.

26 to 30% where the figures that the Reagan team put together. A specific problem was that unless people on public assistance, SSI and other government funded programs could be made exempt from the flat tax they would need to increase their incomes to cover the cost of the tax. We would be increased to pay that bill.

Next problem was how to make business purchases exempt. There was no solid conclusion if I recall correctly. The primary argument was business purchases could not be tax. Weighs and Means committee said this was not acceptable. There again, we would be increased to pay that bill.

How about food. Do we then tax food?

What about Fuel taxes already in place? Do we keep those current taxes and allow more taxation on top of that?

Do we keep these 2nd class citizen taxes like the ones on Tobacco and alcohol?

I have many more question and most of them have not been answered or even addressed.

I just don't see it working.

This about this. No tax return from what you paid in. Take the total figure of the taxes you paid last year. Add up all the purchases you made last year then add 10% to that and see what is bigger.

It should come as no surprise that most of the people that support this type tax make over 200,000 a year.

Fix what we have in place. Put it back on the original plan. Tell congress to quit using your SS to help their crashing budget. These people we elect are not even trying to work for the benifiet of all. Are they.

I for one would like to see a national sales tax. My reason is very simple, fairness for all. It gets my goat to see people get back 3, 4 , or even $5,000, back each year when they haven't paid in near that amount.
The flat sales rate treats everyone fair, regardless of income, we all make purchases. And with that said, the more a person makes, the more they purchase, and the more expensive their purchases are. Along those lines, I would make all purchases, including food taxable. I think the 10% rate is simply a best guest at what the rate would have to be, and would be adjusted yearly for the first few years until they had a better idea of what it would take.
I do agree with one thing Chuck says, Our government needs to control their spending and get their hands out of our social security funds.
While you have me on my soap box, what about vehicle taxes in KY. My view, it's double taxation having to pay taxes each year beyond the initial purchase. I thought that was one of the reasons we went to war with England?

..................Eddie, you do have a point with car taxes. Ohio pays once & that's it while we pay annually when the "Frances Cotterill" birthday cards are mailed out.

The state spends waaaaay too much of our dollars on pet projects & therefore we continue to pay like robots.

Yes, that's why we left England & I couldn't agree more in doing so.

Someday, the American people will get tired of the pork spending & then something will be done about it...................see ya Mark
