My husband has been contacted about a job with Mitsubishi and we are looking into the area. We are from GA. Here are a few questions off the top of my head...
*How much is land on average per acre?
*What are the school systems like there?
*Do you know any homeschoolers there?
*How is the weather there? We are used to HOT summers and barely any winter and we hate it!
*How are the bugs there? Down here we have mosquitoes, sand gnats and bugs galore!
*Anyone know anything about the mitsubishi place there? Do they have many layoffs or anything? What about the benefits there?
*Is it hard to find a house or place to rent?
*Do you have many grocery stores there? Farmers markets? or CSA's?
*How is medical care there?
I'm sure I'll think of many more questions, but thats' all for now. Thanks so much!

Depends on if you are looking in the city limits or outside the city limits. Within the city limits most lots go for 15K-20K most lots are 0.5 acre or less some a little more, outside the city limits most of the areas you will find will be new subdivisions being built most within the same price range but you might get a bit more land
*What are the school systems like there? We have a Parochial School (St. Patrick) and we have a our county school system which is in the top 10% in education for the state of Kentucky.
*Do you know any homeschoolers there? Acoolmom a member of our site homeschools, she can let you know about that.
*How is the weather there? We are used to HOT summers and barely any winter and we hate it! The weather here is different than in the south. We can have hot summers but ours is hot due to humidity. We can get some bad snow storms in the winter as well. This past summer was mild by far only a few days with temperatures in the 90's. The past few winters we have had problems with ice, not much snow though. But we have had our share of that in years past as well 24inches plus about 10 years ago.
*How are the bugs there? Down here we have mosquitoes, sand gnats and bugs galore! We have mosquitoes, in a few years it will be our turn for the cicada's (which are a real nuisance) Some people even have problems with ladybugs in their houses year round.
*Anyone know anything about the mitsubishi place there? Do they have many layoffs or anything? Don't know much about Mitsubishi except they keep expanding. What about the benefits there? Most factories in the area have good benefits considering.
*Is it hard to find a house or place to rent? Depends on your price range. If you go to our local newspaper's site http://www.maysville-online.com/ they have a link there for Showcase of homes, it lists most of the realtors in the area and you can browse for your house.
*Do you have many grocery stores there? We have Krogers, Super Wal-Mart, and a Jubliee have heard rumors about a Meijer but haven't seen one being built. Farmers markets? We have a couple places during the summer months for farmers market. One gentleman by the name of Armbruster is still selling even this late in the year.
*How is medical care there? Our hospital is Meadowview Regional Medical Center it is in the top 100 not sure if that is for this area or just the name. The area keeps expanding getting more and more specialists. We have Kid Care Network with Dr. Michael Coleman. He is a great doctor if you have kids. If you ask around you can get information on other doctors that you may need.

Hi Brandy:
I can't answer every single question, since I only moved here about 3 years ago, but since it was only 30 miles from my original home, and had relaitives here, it was my adopted town.
But I work in a real-estate office, and a liscensed (trainee) real-estate apprasiser, so I may be able to help.
First you can run to a couple of web sites for home sales. One, the Buffalo Trace MLS has several web sites: http://www.usamls.net/buffalotrace/default.asp?content=office&menu_id=5520&lid=428
Also you can come to my company's web site: www.reddenrealestate.com
Now to your questions.
*How much is land on average per acre?
*How is the weather there? We are used to HOT summers and barely any winter and we hate it!

Land is going to be dirt cheap compaired to your place :). We have people coming in from Cincinnati to buy up cheap land. You'll have to talk to my father about acreage/farms (reddenjr@maysvilleky.net)
As for rent, that's - tricky to say the least. My cusion has about 16 houses she rents. Our office is handling them as well: Again my father can help you on all the real-estate needs (His name is Ron)
Weather: Weather tends to be humid here, since we're within a few miles from the Ohio river. it's rarely over 100, but 90s is commoon in the summertime. During a severe El-Nino, we have 3' snows but that's only about once every say 5 - 7 years. But then, the roads are pretty good. We live on a major highway too.
Maysville too, is accully a duel city. Washington is a tiny Frontier town that's incorporated into Maysville. It's an especially nice place to live.
The bugs here arn't especially problematic. mosquitoes yes, blood sucking gnats to. But black flies, deer flies arn't much of a problem. Kind of depends on where your living. Close to a livestock farm, flies are really a problem. In town, not so bad. The folks live in a area where it's close to wilderness area, but is within town. I see deer around here all the time. Rabbits, squirrels, crows.
As for groceries, there is a Superwalmart, Kroger, Big K (K-mart), a local chain (jubilee), A Save-a-lot, and a few privately owned grocery, along with the standard convenience stores.
Medical care: Sadly I've had to learn about it in the last full year, so yes. There is a heart clinic, full hosipital, several good MDs, Endrologist, a mental health clinic, a few other specialist style clinics too. We have a medical park where all this is located in one area. Ambulance service, Helicopter. We have a great diabeties support group, cable, AND DSL internet access as well.
A large library as well, plenty of people to work on your computers as well (hehe)
Anymore questions, please ask!

I work for Mitsubishi, it is a great place for this area. There have not been any lay-offs don't worry. If you live outside of Mason County land is real cheap.
What job was your husband offered?

............as a person who has spent almost my whole life here, I can vouch for Maysville as still having the "small town" life still with her. We have shops that allow you to purchase almost anything you need & also most of the mid-priced restaurant chains to dine with.
Once you get to know some friends, you should really like our area. The schools as you have read are good, most of the major Protestant churches are here ( Catholic also ) & some of them are really active with things to do. ( If you have small kids, the Maysville Church of the Nazarene has a very active kids programs. )
We are far enough away from the big city life to avoid the big time crime, yet, we are only 60-70 minutes away from the Reds, Bengals, U.K Wildcat games & other assorted big city attractions.
If you like water sports, the Ohio River borders Maysville & the summers are like yours, hot. The golf is pretty good & reasonable. If you golf, how about playing 18 holes & ride ( thru the week till 2pm ) for only $15.00 each?? Yes, it happens around here.
The Rotary Club, Lions Club, Jaycees, Women's clubs, Cub & Boy Scout Troops, & most of the other assorted clubs & groups are available also.
If you let us know more specific about any particular activity or things that interests you, someone here will give you the answers you are seeking.
Just let us know.
Thanks for asking................see ya Mark

Just wanted to thank everyone for replying. Everything sounds great. I'm a little surprised you have such warm summers and not a lot of snow. Does it just not snow often or do you just not get much of it when it does? I guess we won't have to worry about having a 4wd then right? Well, thanks again for being so friendly and answering my questions!

Brandy:
No, when it snows, it's not heavy. 5" is about the most on normal years, and roads are kept pretty clear and clean. As for a 4 wheeler, well depends on where you live, or go. I regularly go though rural roads, but rarely do I have to switch to 4 wheel, except for times when it's snowing then it's for safety. Mason Co is pretty flat, but Fleming Co is rolling. Lewis Co is about half-rolling to hilly with less developed roads. In 1976 our schools was out for almost a full month due to a very heavy snowfall, and roads to many kids homes almost impassable. Thankfully that hasn't happened again.
So bring your small car, and have fun :). Gas prices have been reasonable, but higher than I bet in GA. Right now they're running in the 1.80s but have been hitting the $2+ reciently.
