ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) the governing agent of Domain Names and IP addresses has announced that it will not require a reply notification to transfer domain name.

As you my be aware, the Internet allows computers access on a series of numbers call IP Address. Your computer uses an IP Address to get Online. Servers like this one, maysvillekybbs.com also uses and IP Address.

In the case of a server ICANN set up a standard called DNS or Domain Name Servers. These DNS turn Internet Domain Names into an IP Address.

In short this allows you to type in a name for a server like maysvillekybbs.com and then through the magic of DNS converting it to an IP Address for you and web page appears.

In the past if someone was to request a transfer of a Domain Name it would require the owner to reply and give their permission to get it transfered. With the new Law/Ruling this is not going to be the case.

ICANN has now said that you owner need not reply or have to give direct reply permission before a name can be transfered.

Anyone can now open a name account and request the transfer of any name. A notice will be sent to the owner but if he fails to reply to the email the domain will be automatically transfered to the new owner.

The only way to prevent this from happening to you is to make sure that the place that registers your Domain Name Locks you name from transfer. This will insure that if someone request you Domain Name it will not be transfered till you physically go and unlock the domain.

The way I read the Law/Ruling is that if someone does gain custody of your Domain Name you can plan on 1000's of dollars to get it returned to you in legal fee's or you just lose the Domain Name.

If you have not locked your domain names you have till November 12, 2004, to get them locked. If you registrant does not have locking available I would recommend you transfer to one that does ASAP.

godaddy.com and directnic.net are the 2 I use and they both have domain locking.

Anyone Else know of any feel free to post them...
